When I was about 5
years old, my mother found me at the piano one day
picking out the melody to a song. As she watched,
she realized that I had a God given talent for
music. For many days after that I would go to the
piano and pick out the melody to different songs
from church or school.
My mother then showed me a few chords and soon I
was playing the melody with right hand and using
the proper chords with the left hand.
When I was about eight, my grandmother enrolled me
in a private piano class where my instructor taught
me how to play by note. But at home, I would play
what sounded good rather than reading what was
written on sheet music. I remember being so
frustrated when reading music because I felt so
bound to what was written. It was like a bubble
inside me just waiting to burst out.
Later, my mother had me take piano lessons from a
man and woman from church who played by ear. It
was then that my musical abilities with the piano
began to explode. Within in months I was able to
play several songs that I knew from church and
school.
Finally, when I turned 16 our minister at church
asked me to assist the pianist at church. So I
began to play at church during our midweek
service. That probably had the biggest impact on
me. You see, at the church I attended (a
Pentecostal Church) the song leader just jumped up
on the platform and began singing. I was forced to
hear the changes and follow him as he sang. My
ability to play the piano continued to grow during
the next three years. It was during those church
services I had to put all I had learned to use ... on
the spur of the moment. Many times, during one
song, our song leader would switch to another
song ... and so on.
At the same time, I began giving lessons to younger
students. It was at that time that I developed the
Piano By Ear Chart. Using a spreadsheet, I
constructed a table to represent the different
rules for making chords and so on. I used it to
teach students piano scales, piano chords,
progressions and so on. Every one of my students
had to memorize this chart. I realized that
by teaching about the piano as an instrument
provided a different approach and that after fully
learning all the scales, chords, and chord
inversions, my students would have a firm
foundation to apply to any song while playing by
ear.
Plus, the instruction I used taught my students to
hear and memorize many common patterns that
appeared in many songs. I used ear training
techniques to predict the different chord changes
in songs.
Although I continued learning to read notes, my
first love was playing by ear. Everywhere I went I
was asking pianists to show me something new! And
so, for the last 17 years I have been sharing my
knowledge with others. |
